The Namib is one of the most fascinating places on earth and home to a wide variety of desert-adapted plants and animal that are found nowhere else in the world. Stretching all the way from the Olifants River in South Africa to the southwestern parts of Angola, the most spectacular section of the desert lies between Luderitz and Swakopmund. The scenery varies from gravel plains with rocky out-crops in the south to the inhospiable sand sea of the central Namib and the flat gravel plains north of the Kuiseb River, which is choked by the encroaching dunes before it can reach the Atlantic Ocean at Walvis Bay.
The Namib - known as ‘The Living Desert’ - is a world of vast space, endless horizons, dramatic desertscapes and jagged mountain heights. Led by Sossusvlei’s expert rangers and naturalists, explore the desert by quadbikes (all-terrain four-wheeled motorcycles), open 4x4 vehicles - even by hot-air balloon. Excursions to the famous Sossusvlei sand dunes, the highest in the world and Sesriem Canyon will add to this unforgettable desert-safari experience.
The Namib Desert boasts the dauntingly desolate landscapes of the Skeleton Coast, some of the biggest sand dunes in the world, some uniquely adapted desert wildlife and a number of breathtaking natural attractions. Highlights of the Skeleton Coast National Park include the Agate Mountain salt pans, the clay castles of Hoarasib and the Cape fur seal colony at Cape Fria. The clay pans and huge orange sand dunes of Soussusvlei are among Namibia's most famous tourist attractions and a must-see in the Namib Desert.
One of the best places to stay when exploring the desert is the charming seaside resort of Swakopmund, which has wonderful food, great beaches, plentiful watersports and extreme sports facilities and is conveniently located close to a number of superb desert landscapes. The city of Walvis Bay is also a good base for travel in the Namib, with spectacular bird watching opportunities, among other things.
Many tour operators offer a variety of desert wildlife safaris, boat tours along the coast and 4x4 jaunts through stunning desert landscapes. For the adventurous, dune boarding is a popular activity and scuba diving is possible along the coast. Surfers should head to Skeleton Bay.
